Shri G. S. Khaparde Diary
Shri G. S. Khaparde Diary
(Diary of the Hon’ble Mr. G.S. Khaparde (events between 1910 December and 1918 March)
7th December 1910
In the morning after my Pryer, Mr. Baba Saheb Bhate, who is a retired Mamlatdar, came to the Wada and sat talking with us. He has been staying here for some time and has a peculiar kind of calm on his face. We say Sayin Maharaj as he was going out and went to him in the musjid in the afternoon. I, Babasaheb Sahasrabuddhe, my son Baba, Bapushaeb Jog and children went togetherand sat there. Sayin Maharaj appeared to be in good humour. He asked Babasheb Sahasrabuddhe whether he came from Bombay. abasahen replied in the affirmative. Babasaheb was then asked wether he would return to Bombay. He again replied in the affirmative, but added that he could not be certain of remaining there as it would depend on circumstances. Sayin Maharaj remarked, "Yes. It is true, you have many things on hand and have to undertake more. You will be here, you will be hear, you should see yourself. The experiences gone through are real. They are not fanciful. I was here thousand of years ago". The Sayin Maharaj turned to me and started on apparently a new track. He said "This world is funny. All are my subjects. I look upon all equally, but some became thieves and what can I do for them? People who are themeselves very near death desire and make me great deal. They hurt me a good deal, but I said nothing. I kept quiet. God is very great and has his officers everywhere. They are all powerful. One must be content with the state in which good keeps him. But Iam very powerful. I was here eight or ten thousand years ag". My son asked him to tell a story as he told him before. Sayin Maharaj asked what story it was. My son replied that it was a story about three brothers who went to a Musjid. One of them wished to go out and beg. The others did not want him to do that, on the ground that food obatined by begging would be impured and would pollute their chowka. The third brother replied that if the food spoilt the chowka his legs should be cut off & c. Sayin Maharaj said it was a very good story. He would tell another when he was in the humour. My son said he did not know when the thing would happen, and if the hummour recurred after he left, there would not be much use. There upon Sayin Sahib told him that he should rest assured that the story would be told before he left.I ak\sked him why he was angry yesterday and he replied that it was because the Teli said something. Then I asked him why he cried out "Do not Beat. Do not beat" today at the time of the distribution of food, and he replied that he cried out because the patil family was quarrelling and divided among themselves. Sayin Sahib spoke with such a wonderful sweetness and he smilled so often and with such extraordinary grace that the conversation will remain engraved in my memory. Unfortunately other people came and the conversation was interrupted. We were so sorry for it but it could not be helped. We returned talking about it. Tatyasahib Nulkar was not present during the first part of the conversation but came later on. Balasahib Bhate came in the evening and we sat again talking about conversation.
8th December 1910
In the morning, after prayer, we saw Sayin Maharaj As usual when he was going out. Leter on we went to see him in the afternoon but had to turn back as he was washing his feet. Babasheb Sahasrabuddhe, myself, my son and a certain gentleman who came this morning formed the company that went and had to return. Tatyasahib Nulkar did not accompany us. Leter on we went again, but Sayin Sahib dismissed very soon. So we returned. He appeared very much engaged in thinking out something. At night Sayin Sahib slept at the Chavadi and we went to see the procession. It was very nice. The gentleman mentioned above is a Police-Officer, I believe, Head Constable. He was charged with extracting money and tried by the court of sessions. He vowed to visit Sayin Maharaj if he was acquitted. He was acquitted and so came to fulfil his vow. On seeing him Sayin Maharaj appeared affected and said "Ehy did you not stay a few days there? The poor people must have felt disappointed". He repeated this twice. We learnt afterwards that the gentleman's friends pressed him to stay and that he did not comply with their request. He had never seen Sayin Maharaj before. The wonder is how Sayin Maharaj Knew him and said what he did.

How Udhi cured an advanced case of consumption
How Udhi cured an advanced case of consumption
SHIRDI SAI BABA'S MIRACLE THROUGH GURUJI-6
HOW UDHI CURED AN ADVANCED CASE OF CONSUMPTION
Shri B.N. Konar is a clerk in the Bansagar Project Circle office at Rewa. In the Sixties he began suffering from consumption which reached an advanced stage. He began vomitting blood. Being a grand nephew of Guruji (Shri R.N.Konar, who attained samadhi in 1981) of Shri Sai Baba Durbar at Jabalpur, he approached the latter for redress. As was his wont in such cases, Guruji made 21 doses of Udhi and sent them to be taken for 21 days first thing in the morning with honey. It was accordingly done and, stage by stage, the cure was completed. Today B.N.Konar is in good health, married and blessed with a bonny baby boy.
Glory be to Shri Shirdi Sai - Grace be to all
Note : Guruji used to prescribe Udhi with honey in the morning , as a panacea for many ills. H.H. Shri Narasimha Swamiji, a great apostle of Baba used it as the only medicine par excellence.

So Many Ways To Love by Elizabeth Benson
So Many Ways To Love by Elizabeth Benson
Story No.1
There were two incidents involving my car, in which Sri Sathya Sai made his presence known to me. The first incident was, for me, very dramatic. I had read of many incidents regarding Swami’s Omnipotence but never been involved in one. It was very exciting stuff which always happened to others. I was just a very ordinary, older woman who was learning about these things rather late in life.
One day, as I was driving alone in my car, I came across a young person lying on the side of the road, moaning, ( I thought) “Oh, I hit and run!” and I stopped and went back to see what I could do. IT was a young boy about fourteen years of age. As I bent over him to see what was wrong, he was moaning and saying, “Leave me alone, Leave me alone,” I said he couldn’t stay there as he was lying on the road,. “Come along,” I said. “I will take you to the hospital.”
At this, the “victim” jumped up and started to walk off. I was completely bewildered as one minute the youngster was lying moaning and the next walking off. I had not been aware of another car approaching, but he was.
Once this car passed on its way and was out of sight, he turned and came back to me. I was now standing beside my car. The key was till in the ignition and the driving side window was down. As he came up to the car he said to me, “ I think I’m hurt,” and he bent his head and indicated behind his ear in such a way that he was looking into the car.
Quick as a flash he had opened the car door, was in the driver’s seat and turning on the ignition with his left hand while his right slammed shut the car beside him. I had just sufficient presence of mind left to reach in through the window and keep turning the ignition off. This went of for some minutes, until I managed to pull the key out.
Then there was a struggle as he tried to get out of the car and I tried to keep him in it. I thought if he got out he would probably hit me. Finally, in desperation, I said in my mind, “Swami, you will have to do something about this.”
No sooner had I said those words in my mind then I found myself sitting in the car with the key in the ignition, my hands on the steering wheel, and the boy standing outside the car. The amazement I felt is beyond desperation! I hurriedly left the scene while fervently thanking my beloved Sathya Sai. Who knows what may have happened to me if Swami hadn’t come to my rescue.
Story No.2
At that time of the second incident I was driving a Suzuki Hatch two seater. A lady friend had been living with me for some months, so this little two seater suited us very well. However, my sister was coming from New Zealand to visit me and this meant the three of us could not go out together in a two-seater car. By this time I had learnt to talk to Baba about my problems, and I asked him to do something about this one.
When addressing Swami, I have found that one must be very careful about the wording of a request. I told Baba I could put one of my passengers into the back, but it would be uncomfortable for them and also illegal. Indeed, I needed another car for my sister’s visit, I told him. But I certainly was not in a position to buy another car, so it was up to Swami to help me solve my problem.
One Sunday, about ten days before my sister’s arrival, my friend Jane and I had been with the Sathya Sai Service Group visiting our less fortunate fellowmen. We were on our way home in the gloom of an early winter evening, when the driver of the tuck in front of me decided to make a right hand turn, giving no indication either physical or by indicator lights. The end result was that I hit a pole on the road’s grass verge. Jane spent one night in the hospital with whiplash. I had mild shock. The Suzuki was a write off broken down.
Well, Baba had successfully got rid of my car. Now I was without one altogether. As I was not insured this was quite a problem. The young man driving the truck was insured and he was, most definitely, in the wrong, as witnesses could testify. I felt confident of things turning out well for me.
But Swami was not about to make things too easy for me. He made me attend to all the details on my own. He showed me I could handle things if I only tried hard enough.
Within five weeks I had the cheque in my hand to buy another car. Everyone tells me it is unheard of to be paid in such a short time. All thanks must go to Baba for giving me the confidence and the right words to say.

Prof Katsuri's story, Why fear Iam Here
Prof Katsuri's story, Why fear Iam Here
Prof Katsuri says that we not fear when Baba is here. He says you think that there is His assurance"Why fear when I am here"?...and you feel absolutely confident and try to break your neck, because He will save you !
You neglect even the fundamental precautions ! If some one says, "Don't go there," but you go there saying "Ah! Swami is there ! why fear/ That kind of confidence neglecting the very principle of caution.
Swami is in this room, in that room ,in my pocket, in my ring, in my watch...He is everywhere and therefore no precaution! Swami,s picture is in the car, why bother ? You look at it and go faster and fast untill you meet with with some calamity...That is why Swami has said "Because I have said "Why fear when I am here. He said don,t be over confident and foolish..
.If you don,t follow my instructions you will be in trouble, and when you come back I won,t talk to you then, I bypass you. I take diversion untill the bridge is repaired... When you realize your mistakes and correct yourself, I will call you, I will talk to you again. Again
Swami remind us, to be careful. He said, don't be glad for having been close to me and near me, you may be pushed out!... Prof Kasturi say of course, I have been target a number of times! It is difficult thing to decide how near or how far one should be from Swami...It is something like fire. If you go too near, you get burnt! and if you keep too far you get cold!..
.Taking advantage of closeness to Him, feeling it is my due, because I am a big scholar, because I am indispensable to his glory. Such swelling of head will result in being sent out. Number of times this has happened and we have seen this. Swami Says:- Carry on your highest duty to yourself. Following the four F,s: Follow the Master, face the Devil,Fight to the end,and finish the game. Then you win My love, My Love in full measure. Love is my highest Miracle. Love can make you gather the affection of all mankind. Love will not tolerate any selfish aim . Love is God. Live in Love.
Then all is right, all can be well. Expand your heart so that it can encompass all. BABA

Who is Devi?
In this world, every individual has a mother. But Truth is the mother of the entire humanity. Those who follow this mother will never face any difficulties in life. The worldly mothers are bound by space and time and will have to leave their bodies at one point of time, but Truth is not limited by space and time and remains the same in all the three periods of time. It is the master of all the three worlds. So, everyone must necessarily follow such a noble mother. The term Devi refers to such a noble mother.
Devi is your Divine Mother. This Goddess Devi is also called Sathya Swaroopini, which means She is the embodiment of Truth. So, worshipping Truth amounts to worshipping the Goddess Devi. If you understand and follow this Truth, you will be successful in every field. Vedas also proclaims this Truth.
Devi is also referred to by various names such as Durga, Lakshmi, Sarasvathi, etc. She is described as the embodiment of Shakti, the universal energy.
The supreme Shakti manifests herself in the form of Durga, Lakshmi and Sarasvathi. Durga grants to us energy - physical, mental and spiritual. Lakshmi bestows on us wealth of many kinds - not just money but intellectual wealth, the wealth of character and others. Even health is a kind of wealth. She grants untold riches to us. And Sarasvathi bestows on us intelligence, the capacity for intellectual enquiry and the power of discrimination. One's own mother is the combination of all these Divine beings. She provides us energy, wealth and intelligence. She constantly desires our advancement in life. So she represents all the three goddesses that we worship.
The term "Devi" also symbolizes the three gunas (or attributes) namely Sathwa, Rajas and Thamas. Devi takes the Rajasic form to suppress the forces of evil and protect the Satwic qualities. When the forces of injustice, immorality and untruth have grown to monstrous proportions and are indulging in a death dance, when selfishness and self-interest are rampant, when men have lost all sense of kindness and compassion, the Atmic principle, assuming the form of Shakti, taking on the Rajasic quality, seeks to destroy the evil elements. This is the inner meaning of the Durga form of Devi.
When the Divine Goddess is in dreadful rage to destroy the wicked elements, She assumes a fearful form. To pacify the dreaded Goddess, Her feminine children offer worship to Her with red kumkum (sacred red powder). The Goddess seeing the blood-red kumkum at her feet, feels assured that the wicked have been vanquished and assumes Her benign form. The inner meaning of the worship of Devi with red kumkum is that thereby the Goddess is appeased.
The significance of Durga, Lakshmi and Sarasvathi has to be rightly understood. The three represent three kinds of potencies in man. Ichchaa Shakti, will power, Kriya Shakti, the power of purposeful action, and Jnaana Shakti - the power of discernment.
Sarasvathi is manifest in man as the power of speech, Vaak. Durga is present in the form of dynamism. Lakshmi is manifest in the form of will power. The body indicates Kriya Shakti. The mind is the repository of Ichchaa Shakti. The Atma is Jnaana Shakti. Kriya Shakti comes from the body, which is material. The power that activates the body that is inert and makes it vibrant is Ichchaa Shakti. The power that induces the vibrations of Ichchaa Shakti is Jnaana Shakti, which causes radiation of energy. These three potencies are represented by the mantra Om Bhur Bhuvah Suvaha. Bhur represents Bhuloka, the earth. Bhuvah represents the life force, conscience in man. Suvaha represents the power of radiation. All three are present in man. Thus Durga, Lakshmi and Sarasvathi dwell in the human heart.
Men are prone to exhibit rajasic qualities like anger and hatred. They are the menacing manifestations of Durga. The extolling of the Divine in song and poetry and the pleasing vibrations produced by them indicate the power of Sarasvathi. The pure qualities that arise in man such as compassion, love, forbearance and sympathy are derived from Lakshmi.
When people worship Durga, Lakshmi and Sarasvathi externally in pictures or icons, they are giving physical forms to the subtle potencies that are within them. The unfortunate predicament of man today is that he is not recognizing the powers within him and developing respect for them. He goes after the external, attracted by the physical forms. The relationship between the material and the subtle has to be understood. The remedy for man's life is contained within himself. But man seeks remedies from outside. All that is needed is to turn the vision inward to experience the Divine within. Convert your ichchaa shakti into a yearning for God. Convert your kriya shakti into a force for doing divine actions. Convert your jnaana shakti into the divine Itself.

The Lord's Touch
The story of the construction of the Mandir building at Prasanthi Nilayam is a chain of miracles wrought by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's grace. The most astounding was the transport of the huge girders for the central prayer hall from the railway station at Penukonda sixteen miles away. Girders of 40 feet length had come from Trichinopoly (now Tiruchirapalli) to Penukonda by train. The road from Penukonda to Bukkapattanam was a district board road with a sandy stream at the seventh mile and it passed through a few villages with delicately built houses(!) flanking the narrow road on either side with a few acutely angled curves. There was a track of three miles, from Bukkapatanam to Puttaparthi with a few dilapidated culverts and low-level causeways and a broad expanse of the sand of the river Chitravathi. Then there was the task of hoisting the heavy girders on the twenty-foot high walls. Therefore, the engineers gave up all hope of transporting the girders from Penukonda to Puttaparthi and placed before Baba some alternative proposals for roofing the prayer hall. But Baba did not relent.
One fine morning, the Road Transport Officer of Anantapur district, who was a devotee of Baba, woke up to find a surprise in front of his house. It was a huge crane from the Tungabhadra Dam site that had stopped there and refused to move forward. It had struck work! The driver was grappling with the engine in vain. He could not make it move. He sought the help of the Road Transport Officer who thought that the crane was Baba sent(!) for transporting the girders from Penukonda to Puttaparthi. It was agreed that the crane would transport the girders if it were repaired. The R.T.O. hurried to Puttaparthi and prayed to Baba, who materialised some vibhuti (sacred ash) and gave it to him. This vibhuti was smeared on the engine and the driver was asked to start it and lo! the crane started moving. The surprised driver went happily to Penukonda railway station, lifted the girders with the giant arms of the crane and started towards Puttaparthi. The sight of this giant carrying the girders was a great surprise for the villagers who greeted it by lining up on the roadsides. The crane somehow passed over the culverts, negotiated hairpin bends, lurched over the slushes and puffed its way up the Karnatanagapalli hill! It did not move further, may be on seeing the broad sheet of sand of the Chitravathi River! Baba himself went to the crane, sat with the driver and handled the steering wheel. Thrilled by the touch of the Lord, the crane moved happily to the work spot and unloaded the girders.

"I am no longer your Sathya. I am Sai."
"I am no longer your Sathya. I am Sai."
20th October 1940
From: Sathyam Shivam Sundaram
The Life of Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba
by Prof. N. Kasturi
On the 20th day of October, 1940, the day after they all returned from Hampi by special bus, Sathyanarayana started for school as usual. The Excise Inspector of the place, Sri Anjaneyulu who was very much attached to the little Baba, accompanied Him, as far as the school gate and went home, rather reluctantly. He seemed to see a superb halo, round the face of Baba that day and he could not take his eyes away from that enchantment. Within a few minutes, Baba too turned back to the house. Standing on the outer doorstep, he cast aside the books He was carrying and called out, "I am no longer your Sathya." "I am Sai." The sister-in-law came from the kitchen and peeped out; she was almost blinded by the splendour of the halo, which she saw around Baba's head! She closed her eyes and shrieked. Baba addressed her, "I am going; I don't belong to you: Maya has gone; My Bhakthas are calling Me; I have My Work; I can't stay any longer." And, so saying, He turned back and left in spite of her pleadings. The brother hurried home on hearing all this; but, Baba only told him, "Give up all your efforts to 'cure' Me; I am Sai; I do not consider Myself related to you." Neighbour Sri Narayana Sastri heard the noise; he listened and realised that it was something serious; he ran in; he saw the splendour of the 'halo' and fell at Baba's feet. He too heard the Historic Declaration, "Maya has left; I am going; My work is waiting."
Seshama Raju was nonplussed; he could scarce collect his wits to meet this new situation. A boy, just fourteen, talking of Bhakthas, Work, Maya, and the Philosophy of Belonging! He could think of only one plan: Sathya was entrusted to him by the parents and it was therefore his task to inform them; Sathya could leave the house, only after they came to Uravakonda.
But, Sathya would not step into that building again; He moved out into the garden of Excise Inspector's Bungalow, and sat on a rock, in the midst of the trees. People came into the garden from all directions bringing flowers and fruits; the tope resounded to the voices of hundreds, singing in chorus the lines that Sathya Sai taught them. The first prayer that He taught them that day was, as many still remember,
Maanasa bhajare gurucharanam
Dusthara bhava saagar a tharanam
"Meditate in thy mind on the Feet of the Guru; that can take you across the difficult sea of Samsara."
His classmates wept when they heard that Sathya will no longer attend school, that He was much beyond their reach, that His company was hereafter only for those upon whom He showers His Grace. Many came to the garden with incense and camphor, to worship Him. Some came to sympathise with the family, some to congratulate them. Some came to learn and some, alas, even to laugh!
Three days passed thus in that garden; three days of Bhajan and Namasankirthan. A photographer came with a camera; he wanted Baba to remove a crude stone that was right in front of Him but Baba did not pay heed to that prayer. He clicked nevertheless and lo! As can be seen from the picture of that photograph given in this book, the stone had become an image of Shirdi Sai Baba! But only in the photograph, not for all assembled there.

Sathya Sai Baba's Leelas
Sai Ram
Giving below a Very touching incident and Baba's mercy on devotees.
RS (name not disclosed), a wonderful human being and a staunch devotee of Baba, had a paralysis of both the legs. He showed to some big doctors and all suggested an emergency operation, but not given any guarantee of success. He and his wife went to Puttaparthi, and he managed to sit in a high cushion instead of the chair, lest Baba do not see him. Baba did came for darshan, joked with others and did not even glanced at him. He felt bad and cursing his fate. The next day Baba came near him and asked what happened. He coult not utter anything, but tears were rolling down. Baba told him to go to the interview room. In the interview room, Baba had materialsed some gold chain and gold bracelet and was giving to others, and RS was once again was feeling why Baba is not attending to him, as he is suffering. Baba knows what to give and to whom and when.
At last Baba asked some others to help RS to go to the inner room. Baba asked him what is his problem. He said my both legs are paralysed and cannot walk. Typical of motherly love, Baba had materialised some vibhuti and He Himself rubbed the vibhuti on both the knees. Just imagine, the God kneels down in front of his devotee and applying the medicine with His own hands. Baba then asked RS to get up, but RS said he cannot. Baba took his hands and made him to walk upto the door and then left him at the door and told him to walk. What a wonder, RS, who was paralysed from waist below 5 minutes back started walking.
This incident happened last year, and RS came to our Samithi this week and narrated this incident. He said I am talking to you standing for the past one hour, but last year I could not even sit, let alone stand or walk.
Tears were rolling from the eyes of the audience. "Baba your mercy is great". It reminded us how Krishna treated Sudama.

Vegetarianism
By Neeta & David Sanders
Many of you would say "Why vegetarianism?" Isn't everyone on the
spiritual path vegetarian? Over the past year or so I have come across several
Sai devotees and other spiritual aspirants who are not vegetarians, so I
decided that this would be a very good topic to cover to make people
aware of why it is so important to be a vegetarian if you are on the
spiritual path, especially if you take Swami to be your guide and Guru.
On November 23 1994, Swami gave a very powerful discourse and below
is a small excerpt from that discourse:
"Today, let it be anyone, whether one deems himself a devotee or not,
he should give up meat eating. Why? Meat eating promotes only animal
qualities and demonic tendencies. It has been well said that the food
one consumes determines one's thoughts. By eating the flesh of various
animals, the qualities of these animals are imbibed. Hence those who
genuinely seek to become devotees of God have to give up
non-vegetarian food. Calling themselves Sai devotees or devotees of Rama and
Krishna, they fatten themselves on chickens. How can they be deemed Sai
devotees? Therefore, whether they are devotees in India or outside, they should
give up from this instant meat eating. Those who aspire to become true
devotees of God have to give up meat, liquor, smoking and gambling".
(Sanathana Sarathi, December 1994, page 315)
There are several other reasons why adopting a vegetarian life-style
is more beneficial than a meat-eating lifestyle.
- The structure of our body
- Health reasons
- Ecology and Environment
- Animal Suffering
- Karmas
- Meat-eating affects our minds
- All spiritual masters and great men are vegetarian
1. The structure of our body
Studies of human evolution have shown that our ancestors were
vegetarian by nature. Moreover, the structure of the human body is not suited
for eating meat. Carnivores have short intestines. Their large intestine
is very straight and smooth. In contrast, vegetarian animals have very
long intestines - approximately 28 feet. Because of the low fiber content
and high protein density of meat, the intestines of meat eating animals
do not require a long time to absorb nutrients and thus meat is more
well-suited for the carnivores whose intestines are shorter in length. If humans
eat meat, the meat just sits there for a long period of time causing it
to decay and release toxins. This may lead to colon cancer. The toxins
released also increase the burden on the liver which has to work
extra hard to get rid of the toxins. Thus this may also lead to liver
problems.
Our teeth
If you look at the teeth of carnivores, they have sharp fangs which
are used in tearing up meat whereas herbivores do not have sharp teeth.
Our human teeth are like those of herbivores and thus God never intended
for us to eat meat otherwise we'd all be looking like Count Dracula with
fang like protrusions.
Our nails
Meat-eating animals have sharp claws to kill their prey. God did not
give us sharp claws to tear open the bodies of any animals and so this is
yet another indication that our bodies were not made for meat-eating.
2. Health reasons
Meat contains a lot of urokinase protein and urea, which add to the
burden on the kidneys and can destroy kidney function. There are 14 g of
urokinase protein in every pound of steak. An experiment was done in
Columbia University where living cells were put into liquid urokinase
protein and the result was that their metabolic function degenerated.
When an animal is hunted or about to be killed, the animal knows and feels
fear. Thus the animal's heart rate increases and its body pumps more
adrenaline to its muscles. Even after the meat is cooked, the
adrenaline build-up in the animal's muscles cannot be broken down and is very
high in cholesterol. This leads to cardiovascular disorders. Heart attacks
are the number one leading cause of death in the United States. Moreover, we
also take in all the negative feelings, including fear and anger, that the
animal was feeling when it was being killed. This leads to mental
agitation.
Meat lacks cellulose and fiber. This causes constipation.
Constipation can lead to more serious ailments like rectal cancer and piles.
Meat-eating is a chief cause of cancer. Experiments show that the
burning and roasting of flesh creates a chemical element, known as
Methyl-cho-lanthrene, which is a powerful cancer causing substance.
Mice in labs that have been given this chemical have developed bone
tumors, blood cancer, and stomach cancer.
Most people assume that meat is clean and safe and that there are
inspections done at all butcheries. There are far too many cattle,
pigs, poultry killed for sale every day for each one to actually be
examined. It is very difficult to check whether a piece of meat has cancer in it.
Currently the meat industry just cuts off the head or leg if it is
diseased and removes the bad parts and sells the rest of the animal.
When human cancer cells were injected into animals, the animals also
developed cancer. The same is true for eating meat with cancer in it. How can
anyone know if they are eating a piece of meat that came from an animal with
cancer? A famous vegetarian, Dr. J H Kellogg of Kellogg's Cornflakes
said, "When we eat vegetarian food, we don't have to worry about what kind
of disease the food died of. This makes a joyful meal!"
Antibiotics, steroids and growth hormones are either fed to the
animals or injected directly so they will be fatter and produce more meat.
People eating these animals will absorb these drugs into their bodies.
A lot of people argue that animal protein is superior to plant
protein because it is considered more complete. Vegetarian food combined can
create complete proteins. The World Health Organization recommends
that 4.5% of daily calories be derived from protein. Wheat has 17% of its
calories as protein, broccoli has 45%, and rice has 8%. Soybeans,
tofu, beans and lentils have 100% of its calories derived from protein. It
is very easy to have a protein rich diet without eating meat. How much
protein does a person need to take in every day anyway? In fact, if a
person takes in more protein than is necessary, it may lead to
degenerative diseases like osteoporosis and obesity. The way to
calculate how much protein is needed is to multiply your weight by 0.36. So if
you weigh 110 lbs, your daily protein requirement is 39.6 g. Earl Mindell
writes in the Vitamin Bible, "A good rice and beans dish with some
cheese can be just as nourishing, less expensive and lower in fat than a
steak".
It is falsely believed that meat eaters are stronger than
vegetarians. An experiment was conducted by Professor Irving Fisher of Yale
University with 32 vegetarians and 15 meat eaters in which he had everyone hold
out their arms for as long as possible. Among the 15 meat eaters only 2
people could hold their arms for 15 to 30 minutes, whereas amongst the
vegetarians, 15 people held their arms out for 15 to 30 minutes, 9
people for over 1 hour, 4 people for over two hours and one vegetarian held
his arms out for over 3 hours! Many long distance track athletes keep a
vegetarian diet for the time before their competition. Dr Barbara
More, an expert in vegetarian therapy completed a 110-mile race in 27 hours
and 30 minutes. A woman of 56 years of age broke all records held by young
men.
3. Ecology and Environment
Raising animals for meat has its consequences. Since 1960, some 25%
of Central America's rainforests have been burned and cleared to create
pasture for beef cattle. Every 4 oz of hamburger destroys 55 square
feet of tropical rain forest! In addition, it only takes 29 gallons of
water to produce a pound of tomatoes while it takes 464 gallons of water for
the production of each pound of beef! So much water is being wasted.
World hunger would end if everyone became vegetarian because if more
land were used to produce crops to feed people instead of producing feed
for livestock, then resources would be more efficiently utilized. In the
United States alone, livestock consume 70% of all the grain produced.
Moreover, Swami says, "the reason why human population is on the
increase is because all the animals we kill and eat are reborn as human beings
and with the number of animals being killed for food, it is no wonder
that there are so many people in the world" (Summer Showers in Brindavan,
1977, page 182)
4. Animal Suffering
Are you aware that more than 100,000 cows are slaughtered in the US
every day?
Most animals are raised on "factory farms". These facilities are
designed to produce the maximum number of animals for slaughter at the minimum
expense. Animals are crowded together, disfigured and treated like
machines before they are slaughtered. As I mentioned earlier when
these animals are about to be killed, they know and they are terrified.
Swami said, "Anything that has life tries to stay alive. No living
creature would give itself up as food for another living being.
Animals, birds and fish also feel the desire to live just as humans do. They
too would struggle, cry and feel the pain in being hurt, just like the
way we would if we were captured and threatened to be killed". The only
difference is that animals cannot verbally express to us the agony
that they feel. It has been reported that pigs that are being slaughtered
cry in a manner similar to the way humans scream." ( Summer Showers, May
1996, pages 131-133)
It is said that one visit to a slaughterhouse will make you a
vegetarian for life.
Swami says, "Violence in any form is evil and to kill innocent
animals is tantamount to blatant savagery." (Sanathana Sarathi, December 1994,
page 323)
5. Karmas
Another reason to be vegetarian is karma. For those of you not
familiar with the law of karma, this is the law where every action leads to a
reaction. Just like the Bible says, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." So
when one kills animals, or causes others to kill for them in order to
satisfy one's desire for meat, one incurs a karmic debt which must be repaid.
Baba says that we have made many karmas in our previous births and we
can't go back in time to change what we have done. But now that we are aware
of Swami and the spiritual path, we must at least strive not to make any
new bad karmas and eating a vegetarian diet is the easiest step to avoid
bad karma. Some people may say, "But I don't actually kill the animal,
the butcher kills the animal. But Swami says, "If you had no desire to
eat meat, then the butcher would not have the need to kill and sell the
animals." (Sathya Sai Newsletter, Spring 1995, page 16)
You might say that killing a plant also creates karma, but the level
of karma is not as high. Let me give you an example. If you go into a
man's garden and pick a rose, the man might get upset with you for doing
this. What if you take his cow? He will get even more upset. Thus eating
plants gives you the lowest level of karma. Swami says, "It is a fact that
plants also have life like animals. But animals are endowed with mind, and
nervous systems while plants do not possess the same. Animals cry and
weep when they are being killed. It is not the case with plants. Plants do
not feel pain." (Sathya Sai the Avatar of Love, page 132)
6. Meat-eating affects our minds
On the spiritual path, one is always told to eat a satvic diet, which
means a simple and wholesome diet free of spice and taste so that you
are eating just to live, and not living to eat and satisfy your taste
buds. Besides, a satvic diet leads to a clearer mind which aids in
spiritual practices such as meditation. Swami says that eating meat makes man
acquire beastly qualities and demonic tendencies. These are Swami's
words: "Food conditions the nature of the mind. The mind guides the
thinking. Thinking results in action. Actions lead to corresponding results and
effects. This chain of action between the food we eat and the results
of our actions highlights the fact that meat eating leads to beastly
actions and evil effects"(Sathya Sai Avatar of Love, page 132)
Swami goes on to say in the book Conversations with Sai Baba by Dr.
John Hislop that "meat gives the blood its effect, like passion and
similar qualities. Dirty thoughts come with fish. Fish has a bad smell".
Swami in one of His discourses explained how each type of meat
affected our minds. These are our beloved Bhagavan's words: "If the mutton of
sheep is eaten, you must ask yourself 'What is the quality of the sheep?'
They only follow, follow, follow. Thus you lose discrimination. If you eat
pork, you will develop the quality of the pig, i.e. arrogance."(Sathya Sai
Newslette,r Spring 1995, page 16)
7. All spiritual masters and great men are vegetarian
People argue that Jesus ate meat but there is growing evidence that
Jesus and His immediate followers were vegetarians. Swami Himself says that
the New Testament was written many years after the crucifixion of Christ
and a lot of the information in the Bible today is incorrect as it has been
translated from the original Hebrew text and rewritten many times.
Swami had materialized the original Bible for a devotee a few years ago. In
one version of the Bible called "The Essence Gospel of Peace", it tells
us that one day the disciples asked Jesus, "What are the sins we must
shun, that we may never more see disease?" And Jesus answered, "It was said
to them of old time "Thou shalt not kill", for life is given to all by
God, and that which God has given, let not man take away. For I tell you
truly, he who kills, kills his brother. And from him will the Earthly Mother
turn away and Satan will have his dwelling in his body. And the flesh of
slain beasts in his body will become his own tomb. He who kills, kills
himself and who eats the flesh of slain beasts, eats the body of death".
In the book of Genesis 1:29, we read, "And God said, 'Behold I have
given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth,
and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it
shall be for meat.'"
This clearly shows that God never intended for man to eat animals.
The great Pythagoras also preached vegetarianism "Beware O mortals,
of defiling your bodies with sinful food! There are cereals, fruits,
sweet vegetables and herbs which the flame can render palatable and mellow.
Nor are you denied milk, nor honey. The bountiful earth offers you an
abundance of pure food and meals obtainable without slaughter and
bloodshed."
Gautama Buddha advocated vegetarianism and till today all Buddhists
are vegetarians. He said to Ananda, one of His close disciples, "You must
teach people to put an end to killing and brutal cruelty. If one is
trying to practice meditation and is still eating meat, he would be like a
man closing his ears and shouting loudly and then asserting that he heard
nothing."
George Bernard Shaw, the great author, was a vegetarian and one day
got very sick and visited the doctor. The doctor told him that he had to
start eating meat in order to survive. George Bernard Shaw said, "My
situation is a solemn one. Life is offered to me on condition of eating
beefsteaks! But death is better than cannibalism!" He put in his will that his
funeral would not be followed by mourning coaches but a procession of animals
and a travelling aquarium of live fish all wearing white scarves. He
ended up living until the ripe old age of 98 and he did have the procession of
animals when he died.
The list is endless of all the great spiritual masters and other
famous men who have advocated vegetarianism. If I started to quote each and
every one of them, this article could turn into a whole book! But let me
quickly list a few great names in history who were vegetarian: Virgil,
Horace, Plato, Ovid, Petrarch, Pythagoras, Socrates, Mahatma Gandhi,
Shakespeare, Voltaire, Sir Isaac Newton, Leornardo Da Vinci, Charles Darwin,
Benjamin Franklin, Emerson, Albert Einstein, Leo Tolstoy and many more.
There was a time when vegetarianism was regarded as a "cult of the
crazy". People would make jokes about it. Nowadays, vegetarianism has almost
become a fashionable way of life. Many Hollywood actors and pop stars
are vegetarian realizing that it promotes a healthier lifestyle. These
include Paul Newman, Madonna and Paul McCartney to name just a few.
Vegetarianism is not an end in itself. It is only a means to the end.
The end is the Vision of the One-in-all. Swami says "It is the
responsibility of man, having reached the pinnacle to lead himself and all living
creatures towards this goal of liberation and evolve towards higher
consciousness. When we begin to recognize this Unity indiversity,
sacred thoughts will begin to permeate our attitudes and actions. It would
then become meaningless to take the life of an animal, no matter for what
reason, least of all for food." (Summer Showers, May 1996, pages
131-133).
Here is a word of warning to all you strict vegetarians out there.
Did you know that gelatin is made out of the bone and hide of animals. Of
late, I have been finding this ingredient on a lot of foods out there, foods
that you wouldn't ordinarily even think gelatin was in, such as peanuts,
chip dips, marshmallows, salad dressings, most yogurts, ready to eat
pastas and pasta sauces, certain breath mints and candies. So before you buy
anything, it is advisable to check the ingredients.
Also watch out for those Indian mithais (or sweet desserts) with
silver foil on them. The silver foil is made paper-thin by being pounded
between animal tissue. So next time you pick up an Indian sweet that is so
beautifully decorated with silver on it, please think twice.
For all you new vegetarians out there, eating vegetarian food doesn't
have to be boring. There are a lot of soy products out there that can make
vegetarian cooking a delight. Vegetarian food is no longer just peas,
beans and carrots.

10. AVAIL YOURSELF OF THIS RARE CHANCE TO BE SAVED [April 15, 1996]
Embodiments of Divine Love,
One cannot know what would happen in this world from one moment to the next. The world is continuously changing like passing clouds, like flowers that drop from a plant. But the state of Truth is changeless and omnipresent. What sort of changes should a human life undergo; where and how should it go? The stage of youth is only an interval, a passing stage; wealth, jobs and positions also change. Money tends to make human qualities unsacred, since more arrogance and ego develop with the accumulation of money. When there is no wealth there is not much ego.
All relationships such as that between husband and wife are temporary. They were not with one another in the beginning and eventually would both disappear. It was time and destiny that brought them together. However, Truth and Love are permanent and Divine. Truth is God. Love expresses itself in all of us. Love proves the existence of Divinity. Love is God. Live in love. God was there before creation and was the energy for creation. In the beginning there was only consciousness and God was responsible for the entire creation. The evidence for this is in the sacred texts, the Vedas. The culture of Bharat must share this Divine Wisdom with the entire world. In this sacred land of Bharat forbearance adds to Divine beauty. Adherence to Truth is the highest form of Prema (Divine Love). The sweetest feeling is the motherly feeling. One predominant trait of this land is that character is more important than life. Now, unfortunately we are imitating foreign countries. Like an elephant that has submitted itself to a mouse, India does not recognise its own strength and power. The culture of Bharat is spiritually highly powerful and valuable, but because of modern education and culture, all sacred values are on the decline. In ancient times, the Bharathiyas began the day contemplating on the nature of the creator, sustainer and dissolver. In all matters including the building of houses, marriages or other ceremonies and customs they first thought of God. We have now forgotten the Primal basis and we are taking this ephemeral world as permanent. We should think of God first in every matter, from the time we arise from bed until we sleep, but unfortunately we are now drowned in worldly pleasures. Spiritual life is not one of solitude. Spirit has been designed to experience the unity of the entire human race and the Divinity thereafter.
Take the example of the Kauravas and Pandavas. Though they were cousins there were big differences between them. The Pandavas considered God as everything, that whatever actions they performed were dharmic and that whatever they said was the truth. They always considered God first, the world next and themselves last. Krishna was first for them in all matters and they believed that whatever happened was Krishna's plan. Arjuna had intense faith in Krishna who was his only refuge. The Kauravas were the opposite in that they considered themselves first, .the world next and God last. Thus Pandavas were victorious since they kept God first. In all acts and thoughts of the Kauravas there was no Truth and they had lost the farsighted vision.
Today spirituality has become ridiculous. Devotees are afraid to have Vibhuthi (holy ash) on their foreheads. From where has the world come without God? God and creation have the relationship of cause and effect. As one's body has been gifted for righteous action every person must do righteous acts. As an iron machine when not in use becomes rusty, man without work becomes dull. Determine to render service to society. Your happiness depends on the happiness of society. Human life has to be redeemed through the path of action. Sai has advocated worship and wisdom. Although you may not get the work you love, love the work you get.
In the word SAI, S stands for Service, A for Adoration and I for Illumination. All must attain these three states. Every person should involve himself in action. Nowadays we consider a person lucky if he only eats and does nothing but this is most unfortunate. Birth is action. Everything is action. We think that action is work but this is not true. Seeing and breathing are also actions. A human being has been born due to action, grows in action and returns for another birth in action. Even though one's actions are responsible for one's pleasures and pain, unfortunately man today is not understanding this and discharging his duties properly. Happiness and Bliss are derived through actions. Since ancient times Bharathiyas had attached great importance to service for society. One's body has been given only for service. Since it is from one's own actions that one get reactions, resounds and reflections, it is for one's own sake that one does service. If you lead your life like oil on water it is like a dead life. Thinking of God is most essential as He is the first cause of creation. The entire universe is the gift of God. All are Divine; everything is Divine. We should have strong faith in God, but man has lost this faith. When man gets his desires fulfilled he extols God, but when they are not fulfilled he blames Him. We sow poisonous seeds and yet desire sweet fruits. God is the witness. He only confers Bliss as He is Bliss. You yourself create your own misery as a result of reaction, resound and reflection. Divinity remains pure and unsullied but as a sign of his weakness man blames God. Due to their weakness the Kauravas continued to blame Krishna for their misery. To make devotees happy, God Himself suffers. God is ready for anything and performs acts we cannot conceive of. We cannot know what He is able to do for us.
There are so many ideals in Bharat. One great devotee of Krishna named Kuchela was so poor that he could afford only a very small house. God Himself made a more suitable home for Kuchela who was suffering tremendously. Kabir the poet was a weaver of cloth. As he wove his cloth, he continuously chanted God's name; Ram, Ram, Ram. As God was his sole support he overcame his poverty. Only experienced devotees know that if one surrenders, he will not suffer due to God's grace. True devotees will resist trouble, stay attached to God and move ahead towards God. Many obstacles do come when we try to reach God, yet we should have faith and face them. Don't give up until your desires are fulfilled. Retreat is not a sign of a devotee. Exert yourself to earn God's grace; have great determination and faith, then your desire will be fulfilled. Faith is the cause for everything. Faith will make you say yes or no. Baba says "yes" to those who say "'yes"; He says "no" to those who say "no." To Sai everything is "yes." You should never give up God who is Love and Truth which are permanent. Although there is only one God names and forms are different. Though flowers are different, worship is one. To know Divinity you must have faith. Everything is His.
Narada sang, "Krishna can we know You? You are smaller than the smallest and bigger than the macrocosm. You are all over the universe in the company of fifty-four lakhs of people. Among thieves you are the greatest thief. You steal the hearts of devotees'- "Chitta chora Yasoda ke bal." Chitta (heart) is sacred. Where is God? Easwara is to be found in a place called Himachala. "Hima" means soft, white and bright snow. "Achala" means immovable, stable. Likewise to attain Divinity, the human heart should be pure and steady. Purify it and keep it peaceful and equanimous. If it is hot with anger, how can you attain Divinity? You should give up bad qualities. God is always with you and around you and those who deserve Him will attain Him. Even though God is so near, still many do not receive what He wants to give. Even though God has now descended in human form we doubt Him. Why? Because we compare. What about God's Love? It is infinite, so He is the blue - coloured one. Rama and Krishna were called blue colored, signifying that it is not possible to understand their power and Love. Blue is the colour of the sky which is infinite and the ocean is blue signifying that no one knows it's depth. If you hold the water in your hand, that water is colourless.
At one time when baby Krishna had eaten mud, Balarama complained and so Yasoda asked Him why He should eat mud when there are milk and curd at home. Krishna replied, "No, I did not eat mud. Am I a child not to understand and eat mud?" Yasoda slapped Him and asked him to open His mouth. When Krishna opened His mouth all fourteen worlds could be seen inside His mouth. Yasoda asked, “Is it a dream? Is it God's will? Is it true? Am I Yasoda or not? Is He Krishna? Is this an illusion? What mystery is all this?" Immediately when these thoughts manifested, she bugged Krishna. God, when He comes, wears illusion. Although Krishna is known as God, illusion covers Him. Just as ash covers a fire, cataract covers the eye, moss covers the lake, so too, God covers Himself with illusion. The cataract is from the eye, moss grows from water and the cloud has come as a result of the sun. God or Brahman has Maya as His vesture or illusion. With the body as illusion, He manifests infinite power. He will make you experience Divinity, so you should have full faith in Him. Rama always said that he is the son of Dasaratha even though the Sages told Him he was Narayana, and even though He is satshatkara Bhagawan. Rama always asked Sita "Am I God?" When He was alone with Sita He would tell her, "Demons must be killed so this entire drama has to be enacted though it is limited to the stage only. What is behind the stage? This can be .understood only by Rishis and sages like Vasishtha and Vishwamitra.
The Sages knew the Divinity of Rama but could not publicize it. If Sita had not been abducted, it would not have been possible to kill Ravana. Sage Agastya had sent Rama and Sita to live in Panchavati because he knew Rama had the intention to kill Ravana and the demons. Everything happened when they went to Panchavati. The Sages knew the master plan as they had pure hearts and full faith. Since Vishwamithra had the spirit of sacrifice, he took Rama to Mithila and had His marriage performed. This was part of the master plan. God is beyond the senses. Divinity is consciousness, but we think from the bodily perspective. We can only understand Divinity when we go beyond the senses.
Swami says:
"Twameva Mata Cha Pita Twameva, (You are my Mother and Father)
Twameva Bandhu Cha Sakha Twameva (You are Friend and Relative)
Twameva Vidya Dravinam Twameva (You are the Highest Knowledge and Wealth)
Twameva Sarvam mama Deva Deva" (You are Everything)
Why should Sai Baba be in action? I have no need to act. Yet, unless I act no one would be able to follow Me. I have to be an ideal for mankind. When God fills the entire universe, how can you construct a temple for Him? When He is Effulgence Itself, is a lamp necessary? When God moves in all waters, is it possible to give Him a bath? When He is present in all stomachs is it possible to give Him food? What more do you want conveyed? Even angels cannot know and understand Him, as it is so difficult to understand Divinity. Follow your conscience and the commands of God and forget yourself. By doing your duty all your desires will be fulfilled. The main quality of a devotee is to follow God's command immediately without having to be told and re-told. There was a person who committed theft all the time and was in prison. After a six months stay, the guard declared that he is released. The thief replied, " Why should I take my luggage, I will be coming back"? We have been born once; we should not be born once again. So develop God's Love; never forget God. Think of God continuously. Human life is rare. Human life is the highest in all of creation. Having taken human birth, if you do not redeem yourself, you have lived in vain.
Swami ended His Discourse by singing, "Govinda Gopala Prabhu Giridhari.”
11. SECULAR AND SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE [April 16, 1996]
Embodiments of Divine Love,
All knowledge is comprised of the material (secular) and the spiritual. Vidhya means full knowledge of every thing. The ordinary type of knowledge teaches an individual the daily routines and how to use his limbs. Not only reading and writing, but everything one does from childhood until old age relates to Vidhya. All that one attends to from day to day using one's five senses of perception depends on Vidhya. However, true Vidhya comprises spiritual knowledge. Human beings can only enjoy the peace of the Atma (spirit) when they practice penance and develop wisdom.
To comprehend Atma Vidhya one must practice self-inquiry and through inquiry see the special nature of the mind and the intellect. This special knowledge pertains to the spirit and the inner, subtle senses and feelings. A person is able to develop the power of renunciation due to the combination of mental and spiritual knowledge. By merely practicing penance alone without control of the senses one cannot realize anything fruitful. The relationship then between knowledge and penance is like the positive and negative; it is related to the inner subtle body guarding the outer physical body. Education relates to the body, penance to the Spirit. The body has been gifted for selfless good actions; one need not be highly educated to use his body for proper action. So, we need both spiritual and formal knowledge to lead a fulfilling, purposeful life.
What is the meaning of penance? Penance does not mean living in solitude in the forest practicing pranayama (breath control), fasting, etc. The ancients protected the body by eating fruits and the tubers so the state of the body was different than today. Today man's body is weak, his habits are all wrong, thus he does not realize his Divine power. Penance purifies the inner senses which are different from the aspect of the mind (chitta) which recapitulates, memorizes, questions and enquires. Man is a bundle of thoughts, a combination of thoughts and counter thoughts.
Buddhi or intellect is another aspect of the mind, the faculty of discrimination. From the intellect one's ego develops and grows. All persons say "I" (the personal "I" is the ego sense). The antahkarana (the inner subtle equipment) is a combination of mind, intellect and ego. To attain purity of intellect one must undertake thapas (penance). True penance is sacrificing one's evil thoughts, habits and actions and cultivating harmony of one's thoughts, words and deeds and proper behavior. The power of penance is demonstrated by one's food habits. The unnatural, artificial food we eat today leads to unsteadiness in meditation so our spiritual practices are in vain. If we wish to prepare idly and sambar (steamed rice balls and soup) we must purchase fresh vegetables, dhal (lentils), tamarind and spices such as salt and chili powder. All of these should be pure and clean including the vessels for the preparation of food. To know and practice these habits is knowledge (Vidhya). The cook may be an expert in preparing food but if the vessel is not tinned the food may become poisonous. For those on the spiritual path, purity of mind and thought, word and action are essential. Worldly knowledge is only one aspect of Vidhya. Any human being can stay in one position or stand for an extended period of time without much exertion but in order to run he has to exert himself far more.
This is natural for the body, but not for the mind. The mind is able to run fast naturally, but cannot remain stable or quiet for long. We should develop equipoise between the body and the mind. The mind should be stable but the body should run (perform exercise). One is able to gain experience of the Divine only through his body. Man truly has infinite power; he is like a generator. The body is like a powerful magnet full of Divine attraction. The body/mind is like a television or a radio in that it is able to tune into a multiplicity of events. All Divine powers in nature are within the human body which is a reflection of the Divine.
We are presently wasting the Divine powers within us by talking and listening too much to impure things which lead to mental agitation and emotional imbalance. When the radio is switched on, we hear the music due to some units of current being used. Time is wasted through listening to all the impure talks, and one's senses may become agitated. Also everyone around is affected by the radio broadcasts since light travels long distance in waves of Divine energy.
Divine magnetic attraction is present in all the five elements. This is demonstrated by the magnet's power to attract the iron and make the iron stick on as though they are one. One cannot hold back the attracted object. How can one separate himself from impurity? Do not listen to bad talk, don't indulge in bad talk, don't perform bad actions. One can escape from all of these and gain spiritual Bliss by running away from bad company and having limited talk.
The sage Vasishtha was highly knowledgeable and full of wisdom and penance. On the other hand, Vishwamitra was full of wisdom and penance, but due to repeated fluctuations of his mind and emotions, he had to charge and recharge his energy very often. One day a competition was arranged to determine which of the two was greater; wisdom or penance. It was accepted that among all types of education, wisdom is supreme.
In the Epic Ramayana, Vasishtha was the family priest. Once Dasaratha asked him why he should keep the position of a priest as he was not lacking anything and was full of penance. Vasishtha after having experienced a Divine vision replied, "Oh king! I have not come here for worldly position or status. I deserve nothing. I am working here because God will soon be born in this house and I wish to have His Darshan (seeing), Sparshan (touching) and Sambashan (talking with, and spending time in His company)." Vasishtha had knowledge and Truth. Vishwamitra, on the other hand, did penance but not the penance of the inner senses. Every sage acknowledged that Vasishtha was a Brahmarshi, but no one called Vishwamitra a Brahmarshi. Vishwamitra was a Rajarishi (one who is emotional), though he desired to be a Brahmarshi (one who is Divine) like Vasishtha.
In the competition between Vasishtha and Vishwamitra, Adisesha (the snake), was chosen to be the judge due to His qualities. Adisesha bore the weight of the entire earth, had magnificent powers and penance, all knowledge and was one with Divinity. Adisesha agreed to be the judge on the condition that someone took His place to support the earth. Vishwamitra tried but he failed whereas Vasishtha, due to his wisdom and penance could keep the earth in balance.
Only the devotee and his devotion and nothing else can bear the burden of the earth; devotion is the supreme state that man can attain. It cures all troubles, solves all mental problems and confers liberation. One who contemplates on God becomes God. To attain this state one must have unity of thought, word and deed. Vasishtha conducted his life in this way but Vishwamitra was put to shame through anger and consequently lost his wealth and respect. Man today has largely lost his human qualities of Truth, Love and Peace, Right Action and Non Violence. Here is a bulb and a wire; current flows through the wire lighting the bulb. In the same way Divine power exists in all. If there is to be a garland, there should be someone to make it. You may have all of the materials like flowers, needle and thread but there should also be someone to make the garland. You may have gold, but there should be a goldsmith to make the jewellery. There may be a container, oil and wick, but there should be someone to light it. Similarly, in the body you have a mind and a heart, but it is the Divine current that illumines them. A light could be dim due to the wattage of the bulb; likewise the spiritual power in the body can become weak. Our inner Divine light should shine brightly and be developed through expressing more and more Love. When Love grows faith too grows. View all work as God's work and develop Love and faith. If one doubts, his faith will decrease. Penance is the combination of unity, trinity and Divinity.
But today man does not have steady faith. For example when one opens a tap there is an unending supply of water. God is the tank full of unending Bliss and Love and one's devotion is the tap. The Gopikas had a lot of devotion for Krishna and their leader Radha had continuous devotion for Krishna. She did not waste any of her energy but talked only of Krishna and heard only the melodious music of Krishna. One may consider that Radha's state is impossible to attain but it is easily reached through taking everything as God's work.
Many of you have come from different places such as Madras and Prashanthi Nilayam Each of you have traveled by different means of transport such as train, bus, plane or car, so each has taken a different amount of time to reach here depending on the mode of transport. While traveling in an ordinary train, one may have to shift compartments to reach his destination. This can be compared to the bhaktipath which involves nine forms of worship including listening to the glory of God, chanting His names, worshipping His feet, salutations, ritual worship, friendship, service, and surrender. In friendship we invite our old friends to our homes and offer them refreshments. God should be our oldest and closest friend. Thyagaraja considered God as his oldest and best friend; old is gold; have this type of friendship with God. Today's friendships often depend on status and power. God is in you, with you and around you whereas the worldly forms and events are like passing clouds.
Divinity neither comes nor goes. God is total Love. The following points are important to remember: in this world you and the world are temporary, but Truth and Love are permanent. Love is God so live in Love; Truth is God so follow Truth. Like the two wings of a bird, Truth and Love can make you fly to noble heights. Follow the greatest path, the path of Love.
Everything is God only, so spend your time in Divine sojourn. Take the example of a magnet and iron. They unite and the iron itself becomes one with the magnet. Likewise the knower of Brahman becomes Brahman. You are children of immortality; you are eternal; the relationship between God and you is eternal. The body changes through many births but the mind, deeds, etc. continue from birth to birth. Just as an auditor totals the accounts for the day and carries the balance onto the next page, our mind follows to the next life. We should be able to control that mind by first controlling the senses. Merge in Truth and experience Oneness.
12. YOGA [April 17, 1996]
Embodiments of Divine Love,
The Vedas and Vedangas are sacred texts which reveal the nature of God and the universe. These texts attempt to convey to man that the mind acts as a curtain to block awareness of Divinity. On one side of this curtain is the effect, man; on the other side is the cause, God; the entire universe embodies this relationship between cause and effect. The combination of the two, God and the manifested universe, is called yoga. From ancient times people have not correctly understood the meaning of yoga. Yoga is a derivative of the word "yuj" which means combination or union. Yoga does not mean doing penance in a forest by fasting on leaves and suffering physically. In the science of ayurveda, yoga means a combination of various leaves or herbs which cure physical, mental, and emotional ailments. The word samyoga means combination. In the science of astrology, yoga is considered to be the science of the relationship between time and the position of the stars.
Three rivers in India, the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswathi unite at one point; husband and wife together form a union. The union of two or more materials or aspects is termed yoga. Human life consists of combination and separation, just like the waves which rise and fall from the ocean. Human life is full of problems like the periodic turbulence on the surface of an ocean. The boat of the Lord's name can help one to cross the ocean of life. Patanjali, a great Indian sage, said in his Yoga Sutras that yoga means the control of the five senses and the mind. Yoga also means the unification of one's thoughts, words and actions, directing them all towards God. Through yoga, work may be transformed into worship. Krishna has said that doing all one's work with expertise and skill is yoga. Living in unity with the family, earning well, doing physical exercises, gaining pleasure and happiness are all yoga. The whole world is yoga. As we do not understand the Divinity of yoga, we end up in disease or roga. Man knows what is right and wrong, yet due to his distorted intellect and because of his strong ego he goes on the wrong path. Some people are jealous of another person's happiness; we should follow yoga, to overcome jealousy. True yoga is seeing the good in everything that happens and maintaining equanimity. If one has been bitten by a scorpion, one should be thankful that he has not been bitten by a snake. The Bhagavad Geetha teaches many methods of yoga. Think of the Divinity which is vast, pure and all-pervasive and thus purify your heart.
In the Bhagavad Geetha, Arjuna, with all his knowledge and skills, can be seeing arguing with Lord Krishna on the battlefield. Up until a certain point Krishna did not speak to Arjuna but when Arjuna had finished all of the arguments, Krishna then asked him whether he had exhausted all of his doubts. Arjuna finally became silent and surrendered to Krishna saying, "I will follow Your commands." Krishna then replied, "Now you are My devotee; think of Me only and I will take care of you. In this Kali Yuga, we say that we are devotees of Rama, Shiva or Krishna and chant Their names and thus pretend to be close to God. But did God accept or acknowledge that You are His devotee? God should tell you that you are His devotee. Just as when you send a registered letter you should receive acknowledgement that it has been received, God too should say that He has accepted You as His devotee. Your conscience (voice of God) will tell you whether you are a devotee with no trace of ego. Conscience is Chit (Awareness); Awareness is total understanding.
There are four types of yoga: karma (action), Bhakti (devotion), Jnana (wisdom) and Raja (meditation). Karma yoga means dedicating all your good work believing it to be God's work. You must pray with the full knowledge that God is, everywhere asking Him, "Are you listening to my prayers and seeing my misery?." Then we would feel His Presence and find His two lotus Eyes. God is like your bodyguard; He is inside you, in front of you, around you and behind you. You may have a human bodyguard who can only walk beside you but God says He is behind you also. Your eyes are in front, so how can you see God behind? You cannot see God behind you though He is there. When you look behind. He also moves behind you, but this is delusion. So, in the yoga of action (karma yoga) there is experience with God. As karma yoga involves purely selfless action there should be no anticipation of the results of actions but rather one should accept any consequences.
Once there was an old man who had performed Nishkama karma (selfless service). He had planted a mango tree with the hope that many people would enjoy and partake of the fruits. When he was struggling in the heat to plant it, his son in law was surprised at his action and asked him why he was troubling himself. The old man replied that one's body has been gifted for doing service. He then gave his son-in-law some coconut water to drink which he very much relished. The old man revealed that this coconut tree had been planted not by him but by his father so that sometime or the other someone would enjoy the fruits. This story exemplifies that deeds should be performed so that others may experience goodness and happiness in society. This is true Nishkama karma yoga.
In Bhakti yoga the action is performed with total Love and sincere Divine feelings without any trace of selfishness. The purpose of devotion is to please God who is the embodiment of full Bliss. You don't need to say "Happy Birthday" to God because He is full of Bliss. Say it to those who are unhappy. God who is Bliss and Love may be compared to a big tank, the devotion of the devotee to a pipe and his good selfless actions to the tap. Open the tap and fill your self with Bliss and Love. If one puts poison into the tank the water would then become poisonous water; as is the feeling so is the expression or result. God is the embodiment of purity so with pure Love make God happy; this should be your duty and the goal of your life. Since time is infinite your heart should be also broad. Don't worry what others think of you; surrender to God.
Develop your Love. In a plain glass you cannot see your face, but if this glass is tinted with mercury to form a mirror you can then see your reflection. Similarly, if you have Love in your heart you will be able to see yourself or God and gain Self-realization. Walking is meditation, concentration on boiling rice is meditation, reading is meditation, thinking is meditation; your entire life consists of meditation. Everything that comes from one's heart is reflection. If you think that Swami is coming so let me take Padnamaskar, that thought is meditation. Awareness of the one Spirit or Atma permeating everything, non dualism, is wisdom or Jnana yoga. Names and forms are different but God is one. Beings are many but breath is one. There is no difference in respiration between Japanese, German or Indian breath. Whether you are in India, Pakistan, Germany or Japan, all are watching the same sun; it is only seen at different times. Wisdom shines through the intellect and mind because of devotion. When all rivers have merged into the ocean, where are the rivers Ganga and Saraswathi? They no longer have a distinct name and form when they have merged into the ocean. In today's world most are proceeding selfishly.
Once there was a rich man who had plenty of factories, a mansion, cars as well as good sons who loved and obeyed him. When his death was approaching, they cried and told him they would be helpless without him. The man gained enough strength with God's grace to tell them that they would be very comfortable with the inheritance and insurance policies he had left for them. He went on to tell them that he did not know what would happen to himself, and that no one seems to be worried about it. At such a time in one's life only the name of God can save one. If the name of God has been chanted from early in life, it can then become implanted in the heart. It is necessary to remember God at the end to merge with Him.
Once there was a new priest who held a bell in one hand and the Aarathi plate in the other. The moment he ran the bell with one hand, the hand with the Aarathi stopped moving. So everything we do requires practice. In the path of wisdom (Jnana) one realizes the One Spirit or Atma permeating everything; it requires study. Yoga is union and following God's commands. Such an easy yoga is spoken of in confusing ways. Few today can meditate on God in the third eye (sixth centre or Chakra) because they cannot control their minds (Raja Yoga). Man has infinite power but he wastes it and goes in the wrong direction. Through practicing silence man can limit everything including his thoughts, senses and desires; in ancient times saints went to forests to practice silence. There the animals became friendly because the saints were full of Love and that Love reflected back in the animals. This Love is God. Just as a jasmine flower, spreads its fragrance everywhere, the Love of noble souls spreads around. When you hold a rose, whether in the right hand or left hand, its fragrance spreads. Incense too spreads its fragrance all over. This is the difference between yoga (union) and roga (disease). Fire which is raging in the forest bums all the trees and does not distinguish between a mango tree and an ordinary tree. In life though difficulties may come do not harm anyone. Pleasure and pain are always there; treat them alike. One must learn Yoga Vidhya (knowledge) which teaches students to develop virtues such as discrimination, devotion, discipline, duty, etc. We are not born with yoga Vidhya, but through practice we must acquire all these aspects. With determination we must proclaim, "I will." Life is a continuous flow, how deep and how far no one can say but such a flow eventually merges into the ocean. This river of our life must have two banks for control: steadfastness (Samshaya) and faith (doubtlessness); out of steadfastness comes wisdom. If you are filled with doubt you will be ruined; the one without doubt will succeed. The goal of our life is to develop Love for God; recognize this and act accordingly.
Swami ended His Discourse by singing, "Chitta chora Yashoda ke bal" and "Vahe Guru, Vahe Guru, Vahe Guruji Bolo."
